Siorac lies on one of the most beautiful stretches of the river and has a canoe hire base and places to spend a day fishing. There is also a 9 and 18 hole golf course within ten minutes of the house. Sarlat is a medieval town with cobbled streets, lantern lit at night and with gabled houses, golden limestone buildings and stone fountains. While the shops are always filled with regional goodies, the best time to visit is on Saturday, when the market takes place. In summer it is filled with fruits and vegetables, cheeses and flowers, while between November and March, shoppers haggle over fat geese, foie gras and truffles. If you like shopping, flea-markets (brocante) or jazz concerts, canoeing or just wandering around a lovely riverside town, then you love Bergerac. The jazz concerts, in summer every Wednesday, are free. The shops are small but exquisite, the restaurants in the old quarter, some of which have art exhibitions, have good menus offering a choice of local dishes at very reasonable prices. |
